How to Harness Momentum and Take Action to Become a Strong Leader

Momentum.

Today, let's explore a fundamental aspect of leadership: the significance of taking action. In the world of business, proactive decision-making is the cornerstone of success. And, your inability to take action can have dire consequences down the road. Taking action, any action creates momentum.

Sledding
Sledding down a hill.

When you take your first step, it becomes easier to take subsequent steps. Each action builds on the one previous, propelling us forward and creating a sense of growth and prosperity. You can't slide down a hill without giving yourself a push.

Let's start with the bottom line – the lifeblood of any enterprise. According to the book Fierce Conversations, when there is a lack of clarity it is often followed by a loss of earnings. Every action you take has a ripple effect on financial outcomes, from revenue generation to cost management. By taking action, you're actively shaping the economic trajectory of your organization.

Another author, John Maxwell, described momentum as "the difference between winning and losing." The formula is straightforward:

Character + Culture + Team Attitude = Momentum.

However, financial impact isn't the only metric impacted by taking action, aka - momentum. And Jon Maxell's formula, as seen above, suggests that momentum has several components.

Having a leader that takes initiative needs the right business culture and team attitude. A thriving workplace culture is built on a foundation of proactive leadership. When you take action, you set a precedent for initiative, accountability, and continuous improvement. This cultivates an environment where employees are motivated to contribute their best efforts. I would like to suggest, that the above equation isn't a linear sequence but more of a circle.

As a leader, your behavior serves as a model for others to follow. By demonstrating a bias for action, you inspire your team to embrace change and pursue excellence. Your actions speak volumes about your values and expectations, shaping the collective culture of your team. In essence, taking action isn't just about making decisions – it's about driving progress and fostering a culture of engagement.

Your ability to initiate change and adapt to evolving circumstances is paramount. So, embrace the challenge, take action, and become a strong leader with a winning department.

Make it a great week gang.
